*** Update: Looks like Chavez’ reforms were strongly defeated, and Venenzuela will maintain its democracy!***
The early results are in with reports that Venezuela’s Chavez is finally defeated by a “stinging vote.” The referendum that would have changed their constituation, allowed him to hold office perpertually and a host of other dictatorial measures failed to pass. Some of the Venezuelan protestors believe their country was on the verge of becoming a communist state.
The AP reported that Cecilia Goldberger, a 56-year-old voting in affluent eastern Caracas, said Sunday that Venezuelans did not really understand how Chavez’s power grab would affect them. She resented pre-dawn, get-out-the-vote tactics by Chavistas, including fireworks and reveille blaring from speakers mounted on cruising trucks.
“I refuse to be treated like cattle and I refuse to be part of a communist regime,” the Israeli-born Goldberger said, adding that she and her businessman husband hope to leave the country.
Regardless of the early results I’m sure the story isn’t over yet. Whenever this term is up, he can not even run for President again in 2012, but may run again in the future. Let’s see… he threatens America with oil, has frozen relations with Spain because the Spanish King told him to “Shut up!” (thank you!), and has now frozen relations with Columbia? Who knows what he’s capable of. Let’s hope sanity returns to the Venezuelan nation so the people can return to freedom and democracy for the long-term.
