*** Update! ***   Apple CEO Steve Jobs wrote an open letter to iPhone owners via the Apple website, explaining the reasons for the iPhone price changes, and offering a $100 retail or online store credit.  It seems Apple is full of surprises!

At least it seems that way, especially if you bought an iPhone over the summer.  The Apple 2.0 blog at Business 2.0 has generated heated comments after Apple’s announcement (via Steve Jobs) that the iPhone’s price is now $200 cheaper.

”I am so pissed off at Apple and At&t right now. I feel completely ripped off…”  PetitioinGuy

I’ll admit it, I really wanted an iPhone too… but in the end decided to wait based on cost.  I’ve generally been an early adopter, but realized after spending “early dollars” that a little patience can save you a lot of money.  The comments are really interesting, but I tend to agree with most of the posters that are needling others for complaining about the price drop.  If something goes on sale and you can take advantage of a price match or return policy, then great.  But if you’re too late?  Well, sorry… the price you pay for the latest and greatest is going to be more than those who wait.

“Come on, admit it. you are just upset that you paid an extra $200 bucks for something in order to be “one of the first”. Heck, the flat screen i bought 2 months ago for $2000 is now selling at best buy for $1400. Do i rant and rave and say best buy is the devil? No. I paid a higher price because i got my tv 2 months earlier and got to enjoy it. Things drop in price; things go on sale. We never know when these drops are going to happen. Thats life.”  Matt

Maybe Apple could have done a better job with their timing or announcement… but it’s really not unlike a store putting items on sale, or an auto maker dropping prices on cars at a later time.  I don’t know… maybe  Apple users are a special bunch, and believe they’re entitled to more loyalty from the Apple company itself for some reason.   Well, surprise!  Apple Corp is a business just like any other…  beyond supply and demand, competition and new products will drive prices.  Somehow I think Apple benefits from the publicity… and those who can now buy an iPhone at a cheaper price!
